Like any other packaging, pharmaceutical packaging too has basic function - to protect, distribute, inform and marketing, there is a difference. Pharmaceutical packaging must ensure that the medicines are safe in small hands, but are senior friendly and cost effective at the same time. Packaging companies must also follow the compliance set by the manufacturer and legislation. Since, counterfeiting is a growing concern hence packaging must help user identify that they are buying the original product.

The dynamics of end users needs: Packaging must be easier to handle and easier to use by the end users, since it is not known that the users will be teenager or an old patient. In short, it should be senior friendly. Informative data like use-by dates must be printed in clear cut graphics.

Packaging as a marketing tool: With studies conducted on the psychology of buyer, it was found that low grade packaging disappoints buyers and drives them to another option, since the packaging fails to create its first impression. First rule of marketing is to make product presentable so that user feel confidant while buying them.
